Slices / Seams (2014)

Slices/ Seams is a performative photography and print installation, which visualises, documents and re-presents a series of four walks which converged upon and passed close by to Federation House, Manchester, taking place on the 27th August 2014. Spanton undertook this performance, whilst in the persona of City Scribe, who marks each of the pathways trodden through the cityscape by taking ‘Selfies’ using the smartphone app Hipstamatic and a GPS tracker.

The performance was re-presented to audiences as part of the group exhibition Bed, at Federation House, Balloon Street, Manchester – 21-29 November, 2014. The exhibition also featured works by Stevie Cohen, Ian Colverson, Simon Ford, Bertha Husband, Colin Lloyd, Mary-Jo Marchnight, Alan Marks, Phil Moody, Jacques Rangasamy, Alan Richardson, Lyndall Stein and Ian Taylor.

Slices/ Seams depicts City Scribe framed by aspects of the city itself, using photographic and mapping techniques. The installation reflects on and interweaves the materiality of the city, urbanization, the city’s rhythms, its spatial flows, gender ambiguity, alternative representations of women, self-agency, the embodied subject, social media, ‘the gaze’, self-surveillance, surveillance, ideas around mapping and technologies and the city.
